What is the aim of this initiative?

The project aims to investigate the occupational exposure to microorganisms (e.g. fungal spores, fungal fragments, bacteria, endotoxins, mycotoxins and viruses) as well as biological process waste products (e.g. hydrogen sulphide) and plastic materials (bisphenols and phthalates) among waste industry employees and at the same time map the occurrence of health aggravations among them.

This study will pioneer the assessment of exposure to biological agents in the waste management industry, mapping the potential risk of dissemination of pathogenic microorganisms and resistant microorganisms and identifying relationships between exposure and health effects.

Due to the novelty of the results, the project will comprise workshops to be organised by the promoter and partner in order to share the results efficiently with stakeholders, workers in this environment, exposure assessors and students.
