What did this initiative consist of?

The main objective of the H-WHALE initiative is the creation of a European network for the study and dissemination of cultural heritage and the memory of historic whaling.

Based on the Blue Humanities, the H-WHALE initiative seeks to promote research between different institutions and disciplines - Marine Environmental History, Marine Ecology, Museology, Arts and Literature.

This initiative is a new bilateral collaboration between Portugal and Iceland, involving two museums dedicated to whales and whaling heritage and a university research unit, all engaged in research and dissemination of history and culture about the oceans and their animals.

Following national and regional histories and chronologies of change from a whaling past to current research, education, conservation and dissemination - supported by the (in)tangible heritage of whale history and ecology - this initiative will bring the two countries together and promote a more inclusive and closer Europe through future networking. Here distant regions with different pasts but with common traditions such as Húsavík and the Azores are brought closer together, where Lisbon acts as an agglutinating and driving element behind this future network and study.
