Programme:This project aims to promote Circular Economy in the sector of plastic and can beverage packaging based on the policy of the 5 R´s - rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse. It contains five actions.
The first on Recycling includes the installation of reverse vending machines in the main retail stores in the municipality of Vila Real, for the collection of plastic beverage containers and non-reusable cans, in order to guarantee their forwarding for recycling. It is also contemplated the implementation of structures for the collection of gum and cigarette butts whose final destination is recycling and with this material to produce new materials, such as e-bricks.
The second action focuses on Reduction and is dedicated to reducing the production of waste from plastic packaging and cans. It is planned to install drinking fountains in municipal buildings and equipment and in school groups, in order to make public water available and thus drastically reduce the production of waste bottles. It also includes the provision of drinking fountains for the EcoEvents that the Municipality promotes. Each water dispenser will be associated with a measuring system (Smart meter) to account for the amount of water supplied by each equipment, serving as a real and measurable indicator of the reduction of packaging waste.
In the third action related to Reuse, the intention is to install a playground built entirely with recycled material in order to promote the circular economy associated with packaging and beverage cans.
In the fourth action, the population is called to rethink their day-to-day habits and to reflect on their contribution to the planet's ecological footprint. Actions to involve civil society in the collection of waste deposited along the urban section of the Corgo River will be promoted, followed by an exhibition developed by a nationally renowned artist on this theme.
The fifth action will be to raise the awareness of Vila Real to refuse the production of waste. Here, schools are involved to develop the theme, through works, debates and / or contests of ideas and dissemination of results at the end of the school year.
