The Municipality of Portimão is the council of this municipality and its mission is to define and implement policies taking into account the defense of interests and meeting the needs of the local population.
In this sense, it is responsible for promoting the development of the municipality in all areas of life, such as health, education, social action and housing, the environment and basic sanitation, spatial planning and urbanism, transport and communications, public supply, sport and culture, consumer protection and civil protection.
Project Idea
The fortress of Santa Catarina in Praia da Rocha is one of the oldest landmarks in the Portimão municipality. Built in 1633, it was designed to protect the river Arade’s mouth from enemy attacks, managing to produce an artillery firing line together with the fort of S. João, located on the opposite bank.
Having lost most of its security and surveillance capacity during the 20th century it was revamped in 1960, with its walls and infra-structures being restored and with a terrace with restaurante, bar and a stairway leading to the beach, being one of the most visited and lively places in the dawn of tourism in Praia da Rocha.
After many years of of indefinition regarding this venue’s guardianship and decadence of its premises, Portimão’s City Hall stepped up, willing to bring it back to its old glory, as an important mark on local history that is and also as a key element of the cultural touristic offer of the area.
Intended Partnership
We are looking for an entity that can support us in financial allocation, regarding the various parameters that will be addressed in our project, and we are also receptive to the direct intervention of this same partner, if we already have experience in this type of actions.
