In the framework of the European Year of Rail that is celebrated in 2021, the Portugal's Presidency of the Council of the European Union (PPUE) and the General Secretariat of the Council organize the Online Conference "Shifting freight to rail: on track for a greener future". Registrations are open until May, 10th.
The Commission's Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, published last December, sets a target for rail freight traffic: to increase by 50% by 2030 and to double by 2050. But, despite the considerable public and private investment both in infrastructure and rolling stock, we have observed a stagnated modal share for rail freight the last two decades.
So, what is required to finally boost modal shift for rail freight? At this conference we will explore different answers to this question, thanks to the expertise of high-level speakers representing the rail industry, in the private and the public sector.
The promotor AP-Bridge will participate in Panel 2 “Ship-to-wagon as the driver for modal shift”, where the Side Sliding Loader project, financed by the EEA Grants under the Blue Growth Programme, will be presented.
This project aims to develop a prototype for final technical and commercial validation of the new and innovative equipment, the SSL Vehicle – Side Sliding Loader Vehicle, which has the ability to load side containers over railway wagons, enabling an easy and automatic way of loading/unloading container wagons in ports.
