Get to know the Flores Island Biosphere Reserve

The sixth episode begins with a boat trip around the island of Flores and, in an instant, it is confirmed: this is the island of waterfalls.

The local guides name the rocks and caves. And here there's no shortage of guillemots either. The Biosphere Reserve of the island of Flores, classified by UNESCO in 2009, covers the entire territory of the island and the surrounding marine area, making it the westernmost point of the European continent. The landscape of different shades of green, resulting from the high humidity of the habitats, is characterised by an extensive area of peat bogs, calderas and volcanic craters, which have given way to lagoons and streams. The history and identity of the Florentines is marked by their relationship with the sea and the land, expressed in their tangible and intangible heritage: from the small centuries-old houses made of volcanic stone, festivities, handicrafts and gastronomy (with the pie made of erva patinha, a local seaweed, still being part of the menu of those who keep this tradition alive).
