Launch of the “MAFRA Reciclar a Valer +” project

The Mafra City Council leads the ‘MAFRA Reciclar a Valer +’ project to encourage the selective disposal of beverage packaging

The objective is to contribute to a greater participation of citizens in the recycling process, directly rewarding them when depositing aluminum and PET plastic packages up to 3 liters. This selective deposition of packaging facilitates their separation and increases the quality of the materials, enhancing their recycling.

From April 27, 2021, the 12 packaging collection solutions provided by the consortium of the project 'MAFRA Reciclar a Valer +' will be accessible to all citizens, who will be rewarded for the delivery of PET plastic bottles and aluminum cans according to its volume (0.02€ for packages less than 0.50 liters and 0.05€ for packages greater than 0.50 liters and up to 3 liters).

This equipments, which are located in 6 schools in the Municipality of Mafra and distributed by a total of 6 Lidl, Minipreço and Pingo Doce stores, will allow to test the functioning of the incentive system, contributing to increase knowledge about it and prepare the country for the implementation of the deposit system, mandatory from January 2022.

In addition to the Municipality of Mafra, the project has the participation of Tratolixo, to where the collected waste packaging will be sent, from Novo Verde and Electrão, packaging waste management entities that will help implement the collection equipment in the Municipality, and also from the Instituto Superior Técnico and 3drivers that will support the monitoring and evaluation of this solution.
