Presentation of the iREC project

Presentation of the iREC project

The iREC project of the Environment Program, financed by EEAGrants, was presented at Cascais Town Market. This pioneering project anticipates the future mandatory implementation of these systems in Portugal as early as 2022.

On January 14, 2021, the 10 beverage packaging machines (glass, plastic and cans), which are part of the iREC pilot project, started to operate. The machines are located in several commercial areas in Cascais and allow users to receive prizes in exchange for the packaging placed there. The data collected under this project will be monitored and analyzed by the Nova School of Business and Economics (SBE), also a partner of the project.

This inauguration was attended by Inês Costa, Secretary of State for the Environment, partners and ambassadors of the project and Carlos Carreiras, Mayor of Cascais.

In addition to streaming, the event had a face-to-face component at the Cascais Town Market next to each of the 10 machines placed on commercial surfaces, at a time of interaction between the local and central government and entities involved in packaging management, economy circular and zero waste.
