The Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (IPVC) will distribute, as of tomorrow, 10 thousand reusable bottles for the academic community

The pilot project, Refill H2O, coordinated by IPVC researcher António Curado, will remove annually, from the six IPVC Higher Schools, more than one ton of single-use plastic bottles.

The Refill H2O project was considered the best among 24 applications to the Program "environment, climate change and low carbon economy", promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action (MAAC), having a funding of 140,349.64 euros for the reduction of marine litter.

The IPVC has the partner New Water Product (NWP), which is responsible, after the conclusion phase of the project execution date, to make the promotion of the developed solution in the other higher education institutions. "This partner developed a station tailored to the IPVC and to our usage requirements, from the point of view of the characteristics of the water dispensed and the communication of the refilling station with our SAS platform", explained the coordinator, mentioning that the SAS Social has a new online platform that will allow the student/collaborator to fill the bottle using a chip that is incorporated in the machine that communicates with both the bottle and the card of the student/collaborator involved.

The Polytechnic of Viana do Castelo has already installed the refilling stations in the chosen locations in each school and residence.

The dissemination and awareness-raising actions with high schools are the responsibility of ÁREA Alto Minho - Regional Agency for Energy and Environment of Alto Minho, which is also co-sponsor of the project.
