What did this initiative focus on?

International law, including the Lanzarote Convention, stipulates that children have the right to child-friendly assistance and justice.

However, due to a lack of coordination, child victims often suffer from delayed and fragmented interventions, which can cause retraumatisation and delay the path to recovery and justice.

The overall objective of the 4Children initiative is to promote bilateral partnerships on child protection, child-friendly justice and assistance to child victims of sexual abuse, with the specific aim of supporting the implementation of the Barnahus model in Portugal.

Specific objectives include:

  • Conscious and supportive stakeholders through international 'technical support' and vibrant inter-institutional dialogue in Portugal and with Iceland and members of the Barnahus Network;
  • A common approach and mutually agreed roadmap for the prevention of child sexual abuse with Barnaheill support, and the establishment of an adapted Barnahus model, via support and training by CBSS, which hosts the Promise Barnahus Network.

The overall expected outcome is sustainable exchange and bilateral relations in the area of child protection and child-friendly justice between the main agencies involved, with a specific focus on prevention and the Barnahus model, which is internationally recognised by children, carers, professionals and international organisations as good practice in terms of providing a comprehensive, coordinated, professional and child-friendly response.
