Programme:

What did this initiative focus on?

The overall aim of the AIClimate@EU project is to strengthen cooperation activities and the exchange of knowledge to understand cascading weather/climate events, namely droughts and heatwaves, and how they are associated with forest fires and pollution events across Europe. This project will bring together the Nordic Centre for Sustainable and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Research (NordSTAR, OsloMet, NO) and the Dom Luiz Institute (IDL, Univ. Lisboa, PT) and will be led by Ana Russo (PT) in collaboration with Pedro Lind (NO).

The aim of Dhefeus is to analyse compound extreme events and their impacts on fires and air quality based on innovative methods, including compound event-oriented approaches, machine learning algorithms and climate change-sensitive methods.

The analysis is supported by satellite-based datasets and high-resolution regional modelling of surface-atmosphere reactions. By combining studies on meteorological systems, fire activity and atmospheric pollution, the Dhefeus project will make it possible to address the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

AIClimate@EU will strengthen the co-operation activities of both partners, in particular by establishing a network for the exchange of climate data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods to broaden knowledge of cascading climate events in Europe that lead to possible social and economic disasters. It will also ensure the dissemination of results throughout Europe and promote future collaboration between the two institutions.
