What did this initiative focus on?

The ClimaBridge initiative aims to develop a methodology for the probabilistic assessment of the impact of climate change on the structural integrity of existing bridges, through the coupling of climate risk assessment and integrity monitoring techniques.

It is thus intended to integrate existing procedures for climate threat assessment into those for structural integrity monitoring (SHM) of bridges.

Additionally, this project aims to present the latest technological developments in bridge SHM to the scientific community, technical staff from consulting companies and public entities in Portugal and Norway, as well as to promote technological advances and business initiatives around bridge life cycle management.

Several activities are planned under the ClimaBridge initiative, namely:

  • two three-day workshops (Lisbon and Oslo)
  • joint course on SHM
  • long-term monitoring of a railway bridge in Norway
  • several scientific meetings and
  • a one-day conference.

The expected results are, among others:

  • presentation of national and European research proposals on climate change development risk prioritization framework for bridges;
  • consolidation of knowledge on SHM and climate change impacts/threats on bridges.
