Programme:

This initiative called iSEA aims to:

Promote the link between researchers in macroalgae biology with stakeholders in macroalgae aquaculture in Norway and Portugal in order to stimulate research and development (R&D) for economically successful and environmentally sustainable macroalgae biomass production in both countries;

Identify research gaps and issues that need to be addressed in order to develop sustainable macroalgae production beyond the current state of the art with the ultimate goal of developing macroalgae as a socially and environmentally sustainable aquaculture resource in Norway and Portugal.

Expected results are:

  • A proposal for a joint research project focusing on the realisation of socially and environmentally sustainable macro-algae aquaculture;

  • A Perspective / Scientific Opinion paper, co-authored by all partners, focusing on research gaps and proposing the necessary steps to go beyond the current state of the art in developing European macroalgae farming into a profitable industry in a socially and environmentally sustainable area;

  • Promote public awareness through different media channels for the ecosystem services of natural seaweed forests and the role of macroalgae farming in the green change of the aquaculture industry.
