What is the aim of this initiative?

"Malfunctions of the energy factory” (Mit.OnOff) is a science communication project, which aims to increase scientific literacy in the population regarding mitochondria and mitochondrial diseases (MDs).

The project began in March 2022 and will finish in March 2023.
One of the activities will be the creation of an illustrated book in Portuguese/English and Norwegian/English, for the populations of these countries with the possibility of extending the work to a broader international audience.

This bilateral initiative will actively contribute to engaging society in this important scientific and health topic, in order to promote education, equity and scientific diplomacy, also to facilitate scientific collaboration and stimulating the public opinion.

The creation and dissemination of informal contents about mitochondrial dysfunction and related diseases through comics/illustrations is innovative and guarantees public engagement, considering also the dissemination strategy. 

This project is developed in the scope of a collaboration between the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and University of Bergen (UIB), Norway.

The knowledge of the CNC Communications Office allied to experts in the field (including MDs that follow patients and families), Professor Manuela Grazina (Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biomedicine and Theranostics - LBioMiT - at CNC and Faculty of Medicine, UC) and Professor Laurence Bindoff (Mitochondrial Medicine and Neurogenetics - MMN - group, UIB), counting with a dedicated team, guarantees a science communication product of highest quality with great potential for dissemination into society and with potential to be used in education and medical communication.
