What did this initiative focus on?

The NanoCalorics@PTNO initiative aims to explore the effects of scale reduction (from centimetres to nanometres) on the properties of magnetocaloric materials through a scientific collaboration between IFIMUP (Portugal) and IFE (Norway).

Technologically, it is expected that the developments made through this partnership will have an impact on the development of micro and nano coolers.

Thus, the main objectives of this initiative are:

  • to deepen the knowledge of the micro- and nanostructure effects of magnetocaloric materials;
  • to build strong cooperation between these two research groups, through student/researcher exchange, application to research funds and dissemination of the importance of cooling technologies within new environmental policies.

In order to fulfil the first objective, measurements of calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and magnetometry in magnetocaloric samples at macro, micro and nanoscale are planned.

Finally, the development of a small prototype of a self-propelled heat pump based on magnetocaloric ferrofluids is intended.

This initiative will last for a year and a half and in this period will take place the visit of two researchers from IFIMUP to IFE (Norway) and the visit of two researchers from IFE to IFIMUP
