What did this initiative focus on?

This bilateral initiative aims to develop joint initiatives between APAC Portugal and WayBack that will bring innovative approaches to the prison system and the social reintegration of imprisoned people and those released from prison. Based on the shared values of human dignity and proportionality of punishment and aiming at achieving the penalty’s purpose of social reintegration, the initiative has the following objectives:

• Exchange of good practices and knowledge sharing on innovative solutions for the prison system and the social reintegration of those imprisoned and released from prison;
• Capacity building of the entities’ members on advocacy activities and social reintegration programmes;
• Building awareness of the Norwegian prison system within the Portuguese community and on the Portuguese prison system within the Norwegian community;
• Raise awareness of good practices in the social reintegration of those imprisoned and released from prison.

Both entities are non-profit civil society organizations that work to ensure the dignified reintegration of all people who are or have been imprisoned through activities with beneficiaries and advocacy initiatives that aim to influence public policies in the prison sector positively. Each entity has developed its innovative approach and methodologies.
