STOP-AGEING is a bilateral initiative between Portugal and Norway which aims to preserve and improve the functional capacity and cognitive function in institutionalised elderly people through the implementation of strength training programmes focusing on speed movement control.

The project is in charge of a consortium led by UBI, which includes as partners Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Fundão and Nord University, based in the Norwegian city of Bodo.

It is an innovative project in the way it will be executed, which will count with the participation of 80 institutionalised elderly people.

The aim is to promote social contact and the sharing of new experiences among all the participants involved, promoting the practice of physical exercise on a regular basis in elderly people living in institutions or attending day centres in Cova da Beira and in the Bodo region.

The initiative also defines specific goals:

  • improve functional capacity by optimising muscle strength and power
  • preventing the occurrence of falls
  • stimulate the cognitive component
  • promote social inclusion;
  • raise awareness among the senior population of the importance of regular sports practice;
  • and present practical solutions such as, for example, online training sessions during periods of social confinement.

The UBI work team consists of the DCD teachers Daniel Marinho, Mário Marques, Henrique Neiva and Ricardo Ferraz, and also the PhD student Diogo Marques.

At Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Fundão, the social and cultural animators and exercise technicians César Serrão and Cláudia Andresson and the technical coordinator Alice Rosa are responsible. On the part of Nord University, the team consists of Roland van den Tillaar and his technicians.
