What did this initiative focus on?

The main purpose of this project is the study of shallow geothermal energy systems based on multi-scale and multi-domain, interfacing three domains: the building energy system (including ground characterization and climate conditions); the district system at urban scale (the potential of these systems scaling up from the building to urban level); and the energy storage (minimizing the seasonal effect and increasing the long-term use).

This project has the scientific support of a real case study, at university department building, located at University of Aveiro in Portugal and of two research projects related to the study of shallow geothermal systems, financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

This bilateral initiative is based on the exchange of experiences (knowledge and skills) regarding the combined application of these energy systems applications (shallow geothermal energy + storage) in the context of buildings heating and cooling, at building and urban settlement scales.

With this research work and this combination of technologies (geothermal systems and energy storage), as well as the knowledge sharing is expected a significant societal impact, since it is believed that the results can be replicable from the building to the urban scale, towards a more resilient and eficiente context in the energy for buildings heating and cooling.
