What did this initiative focus on?

The initiative “Sustainable Orchestras in Europe | Fostering opportunities for young musicians” is a partnership between two significant orchestras in each of the countries involved (Portugal and Norway). The main objectives are to:

- foster opportunities for young and talented musicians in both countries, bringing them together and allowing them to share experiences in an open, friendly and exciting environment;

- create awareness to the sustainability and oceans preservations, as both countries are peripheral and maritime countries.

We will achieve these objectives with an Orchestra exchange: the Portuguese Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will invite four young instrumentalists from the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and a young Norwegian guest conductor for an Orchestral Academy in July 2023 in Guarda (a beautiful city in the interior of Portugal). For a week, they will have rehearsals and, in the end, will do a small tour, performing in two cities. On the other hand, the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will invite four young instrumentalists from the Portuguese Philharmonic Youth Orchestra to an Orchestral Academy in Bergen.

For this reason, the chosen repertoire will include allusive pieces from both countries. To reduce the initiative's carbon footprint, the main mean of transportation will be the train, within each country.

Moreover, the initiative will undoubtedly strengthen the relationship by allowing both institutions to share good practices and establish a solid foundation for the future.
