Riding the modelled waves in the World Surfing Reserve of Ericeira!

This initiative aims at bringing better and more readily available insights on coastal dynamics in the region of Ericeira, to be used at a decision-making level by local authorities and stakeholders, in preservation activities of coastal assets – including waves!

Funded by the Fund of Bilateral Relations of the EEAGrants, this project results from a partnership between blueOASIS, a Portuguese start-up with expertise in numerical modelling applied to ocean sustainability, and NTNU, the Norwegian university that developed the state-of-the-art tool REEF3D which models coastal dynamics.

Starting in April 2023, the REEF3D software developers will travel to blueOASIS’ headquarters in Ericeira, to transfer technical knowledge about the tool and assist in setting up the models. In line with the spirit of the project of involving the local community, meetings with Câmara Municipal de Mafra, Junta de Freguesia da Ericeira and Ericeira Surf Club will be held, to identify gaps and needs in coastal dynamics data.

Taking advantage of the expertise of blueOASIS in High-Performance Computing, several simulations will be performed based on the objectives defined, and the results shared in scientific peer-reviewed publications. Moreover, a public seminar is planned for the start of 2024, to share the results of this
project.

Knowing more about the needs from the from coastal communities in this topic is really important to this project, to help focusing the research and results produced; therefore it is encouraged that any entity interested in it to engage through blueOASIS’ website.
