Seminar: A Road for Adaptation of Bridges to Climate Change

Seminar: A Road for Adaptation of Bridges to Climate Change

This seminar intends to bring together experts from the bridge engineering field and academia, climatologists, bridge authorities, and decision makers to understand the impacts of climate change on the health of bridges and to propose cost-effective adaptation strategies.

The seminar "A Road for Adaptation of Bridges to Climate Change", under the scope of the Climate Bridge initiative, funded by the EEA Grants Bilateral Relations Fund, will take place on 27 September, at the Agostinho da Silva Auditorium of Lusófona University, in Lisbon.

Current bridge design loads are based on existing data and stationary processes. But what happens if/when that basis changes?
For new bridges we can update codes, but how about the existing ones?
Will existing bridges be safe enough?
Which bridges will be the most affected?
What adaptation measures should we implement for existing bridges?
How much will they cost to adapt to climate change?

Regardless of these answers, a strategy of "wait and see" until everything about climate change is understood is, according to the promoters of the initiative "a scientifically unacceptable and extremely dangerous option".

Therefore, this seminar intends to bring together experts from the bridge engineering field and academia, climatologists, bridge authorities, and decision makers to understand the impacts of climate change on the health of bridges and to propose cost-effective adaptation strategies.
