"From Fenais to Fenais" celebrates culture and community development on São Miguel Island with a closing session

Project promotes social inclusion, heritage rehabilitation and cultural entrepreneurship in the communities of Fenais da Luz and Fenais da Ajuda.

On April 29, the closing session of the project "From Fenais to Fenais" took place, marking the culmination of a socially and culturally impactful initiative. The event included visits to two rehabilitated spaces in the parishes of Fenais da Luz and Fenais da Ajuda, located on the north coast of São Miguel Island in the Azores. The initiative was attended by representatives from Património Cultural, I.P. (the Culture Programme Operator), the National Focal Point, the project promoter Carlos Machado Museum, and several local partners.

The main objective of the "From Fenais to Fenais" project was to combat the growing disinterest in the region’s cultural and natural heritage, while also addressing the high number of social support beneficiaries in the area. To this end, two municipally significant buildings were rehabilitated and repurposed for new community and cultural functions.

Among the project’s most notable outcomes were the creation of permanent heritage exhibitions, support for the development of three culture-based community businesses—which generated 15 jobs, 12 of which were for individuals in situations of social exclusion—and the launch of initiatives such as a Network of Community Gastronomy Labs.

The project also produced thematic materials, strategic sustainability plans, and capacity-building actions for local cultural agents, all aimed at integrating heritage into territorial development. Community involvement was central throughout the process, with participatory-based projects.

Beyond its initial goals, the project also led to unexpected outcomes. "From Fenais to Fenais" contributed to the creation of territorial brands and spin-off projects, further strengthening its long-term impact. A knowledge center is also planned to continue the project’s mission, ensuring its sustainability beyond the funding period.
