Get to know the Fajãs de São Jorge Biosphere Reserve

In the second episode of the documentary series "Biosphere Reserves Portugal", we get to know the Fajãs de São Jorge Biosphere Reserve.

A procession that brings together hundreds of people and where we see cattle being auctioned off, with the animals being offered by the devotees of Santo Cristo, is the starting point for discovering the Fajãs de São Jorge Biosphere Reserve. Flat surfaces, situated on the coastline and nestling between the sea and the cliffs, the fajãs give their name to this reserve in the Azores. But this is a territory of great diversity. The famous São Jorge cheese, Santa Catarina preserves, Caldeira de Santo Cristo clams and nature with its peat bogs and endemic species determine the landscape of this UNESCO-listed reserve in 2016, where we also document resilience to insularity.
