Invasive Alien Species Removal Action

Invasive Alien Species Removal Action

The introduction and spread of invasive alien species is one of the main causes of biodiversity loss worldwide, and awareness and action for their control and eradication is urgently needed.

On October 28, the first action of removal of invasive alien species was carried out at Quinta de Recreio do Marquês de Pombal, under the project "21_SGS#3_More Pollinators, More Biodiversity in the Municipality of Oeiras", and it was open to the local community.

In this activity, the participants got to know some of the main species of invasive flora present in the Farm, and were challenged to actively contribute to the initial control of the target species – pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana).

Although the number of volunteers was low the action went very well and allowed the eradication of 8 adult individuals from pampas grass and the control of its dissemination, through the cutting of the feathers loaded with seeds, of 7 more individuals.
