Small Grants Scheme # 1 - Approval of six projects of prevention and awareness to reduce marine waste

Six projects were approved for the prevention and awareness raising for the reduction of marine waste within the scope of the Small Grants Scheme # 1 with a total allocation of one million euros

The Small Grant Scheme#1 Call was published on July 18th 2019, and closed on October 31st 2019. 24 applications were submitted, highlighting the number and variety of projects, allowing to conclude that the market would have given a wide response for this Call.

The total allocation was € 1,000,000, 6 projects were approved for financing, which will last for about 18 months each. Each project will receive a maximum of € 200,000 and will contribute to increase the application of the circular economy principles in reducing plastics of terrestrial activities in the oceans, promoting awareness and proposing solutions.

The project promoters are municipalities, non-governmental organizations, inter-municipal waste management entities that have established consortia with universities, foundations and sectoral associations, one of which has the participation of a Norwegian partner.

The Environment, Climate Change and Low Carbon Economy Program - Environment Programme - was created following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Portugal, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, with a view to the application in Portugal of the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (MFEEE - EEA Grants) 2014-2021 in the program areas Environment and Ecosystems (PA11), and Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change (PA13).

The Environment Programme is managed by the Secretary General for Environment with a total allocation of € 28,235,294, of which 85% is from the EEA Grants (€ 24,000,000) and 15% of General State Revenue (€ 4,235,294).
