What is the project about?

The MERIT - MothER Income InequaliTy project will produce knowledge about the impact of motherhood in women’s income and careers, and will produce a combination of concrete public policy proposals to minimize asymmetries and promote gender equality in the labour market, especially through motherhood.

It is an Small Grant Scheme #3 project: White books/studies to foster gender equality

  • Production of in-depth knowledge on gender inequalities and the impact of motherhood/fatherhood in Portugal and other European countries:
    White PaperDoes having children affect the personal and professional lives of mothers and fathers differently?
    • Development of 6 complementary studies, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches:
    • Qualitative study on mothers’ and fathers’ perceptions of the impact of parenthood on income and career.
    • Quantitative study on the impact of parenthood on income during and after the pandemic, in Portugal and other countries.
    • Study on work-life balance during the pandemic, focusing on gender asymmetries.
    • Comparative analysis of parental policies in Europe (leave schemes, benefits, and reconciliation measures).
    • Development of policy recommendations aimed at reducing motherhood penalties and promoting equal pay and opportunities.
    • Strengthened bilateral cooperation, with exchange of methodologies, experiences, and practices between Portugal and Norway.
    • Ongoing scientific publications in collaboration with researchers from FPCEUP.
    • Establishment of connections with organisations such as CIG, the International Labour Organization, and movements such as HeForShe (Catholic University and University of Porto).
