What did this initiative focus on?

The bilateral initiative Marine Lexicon was an initiative between Portugal and Norway aimed at building a searchable digital platform on marine mammals and their various denominations throughout history, with special focus on the 15th to 18th centuries.

This platform is full of names, images and sounds, available in Portuguese, English and Norwegian and with resources in 14 different languages.
In addition to animals, on the Marine Lexicon platform, you will also find mythological beings and those from popular folklore, such as mermaids, monsters and unicorns.

The launch and opening to the public of the Marine Lexicon platform is the great contribution of the initiative for all those who want to know more about these animals and beings.

It is a very positive result of a collaborative work between these two countries funded through the EEA Grants Bilateral Relations Fund and by CHAM – Centre for the Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon.
