Professional aquaculture in the Autonomous Region of Madeira is essentially based on the production of sea bream in offshore aquaculture. Currently, its nutrition depends mainly on food products originating from international suppliers, subject to maritime constraints, and particularly, to fluctuations in the quantity and price of raw materials on the international market. In addition, the lack of specialized food solutions for the nutritional requirements of the sea bream production cycle, according to the edaphoclimatic conditions of this Region, leads to enormous fluctuations in productivity.

The AQUAFEED project aims to respond to this need through the development of a biotechnological process based on the biotransformation of agro-industrial residues by the action of decomposing invertebrates and photosynthetic microorganisms to produce biomass of high nutritional value with the purpose of formulating innovative and specialized food products in the nutrition of sea bream in aquaculture.

This solution will actively contribute to scientific and technological development that promote the integration of alternative solutions for the nutrition of sea bream in aquaculture as well as to the ecological sustainability, economic profitability, and the growth of this sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
