Marine litter is one of the most visible and harmful growing environmental challenges today, with an accumulation of plastic in the ocean worldwide. Beach cleaning is a good way of removing marine litter from our environment, but the best solution is to prevent the litter from ending up in the Ocean. Thus, awareness campaigns are the most efficient, cost-effective, and long-lasting solution to this problem.

The Plastic Detectives of Portugal project is a combination of academic knowledge sharing, educational outreach, and practical work. Through reflexion on the origin, time, and distance of litter transport in the Ocean, the project aims to increase the level of Ocean literacy in the school community and society in general in the region of Faro. By inspiring and motivating young people and school staff, it is intended to create an experience of having personally contributed to a far-reaching awareness campaign against marine litter.

Project activities include:

  • Organization of beach cleaning actions.
  • Organization of a workshop for co-educators and researchers on marine litter with the aim of sharing knowledge and compare the nature of marine litter between the Norwegian and the Portuguese Atlantic coast.
  • Organization of a workshop for the school community, challenging students to identify the sources of collected litter and then suggesting solutions based on its origin.
