Description Summary of the Project

Type of Organization

The Municipality of Lourinhã is a Local Government public entity. Known as the Dinosaur Capital (because of its Late Jurassic fossil findings) it is located near the Atlantic Ocean,at 63km away from Lisbon. Lourinhã 's natural resources and beautiful beaches remain untouched and resistant to touristic occupation which make it a region where the sea, the countryside and the historical tradition merge with the sustainable development of the region and the well-being of its population and visitors.

Project Idea

The Municipality of Lourinhã intends to rehabilitate the Paimogo Fort (or Nossa Senhora dos Anjos de Paimogo Fort) with the most innovative and ecological building techniques and restoration methodologies. The Fort is located on the cliffs of Paimogo Beach and it is classified as a Public Interest Building.

This rehabilitation will allow its use for dynamic activities that promote the involvement of the surrounding community during and after its rehabilitation.

Built in 1674, its specific mission was to defend the Paimogo beach, in order to prevent the landing of enemy troops in that easily accessible place.

It is a small bastioned fort, of baroque military architecture, with a quadrangular plan that has cylindrical conical canopies. This fort was part of the second fortified defensive line, which began at Praça Forte in the village of Peniche and extended to Lisbon.

It is an almost unique example of post-Restoration fortification, with few architectural changes over the years.

Intended Partnership

The Municipality of Lourinhã is looking for partners with a vast experience and/or added value in two key areas:

  • Rehabilitation of coastal buildings, with innovative and ecological building techniques and restoration methodologies;
  • Conducting activities in this type of heritage that promote the involvement of the surrounding community and the dynamization of these spaces in order to involve the community after its rehabilitation.
